Besides being a taste-tester, my job was to design the labels. Each member of my family received a special flavor, and there was an extra assortment for those who were curious. The illustrations are courtesy of Edward Lear, an English artist, illustrator, author, and poet, renowned today primarily for his literary nonsense.

Only One Life

In 2010, I discovered the book “Don’t Waste Your Life” by John Piper. Within its early pages, he mentions a “…riveting force in my young life—small at first, but oh so powerful over time—… a plaque that hung in our kitchen over the sink.” This is a simple, personal rendition of the words on that plaque.

Red 2

I was privileged to work with Dr. Nathan Tillotson on the creation of the cover for his first and signature work, a book on decision-making.
From the fruit of his lips a man is filled and will eat the fruit of his ways. Jesus said it this way: “Each tree is recognized by its own fruit… A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.”

Golgotha

He shook the man’s hand, passing a bankroll to him and nodding a silent ‘thank you’ before closing the front door. Noticing a smudge of paint on his hands from the exchange, he moved toward the kitchen to get a wet rag. He looked out the window above the sink, his gaze steady, his mind set. The tension enveloping the world grew thicker everyday, but the clarity of the path ahead of him coursed through his body as if it were his very blood. He would fly to Munich in an hour, despite the rumors of war. Tossing the rag onto the counter, he silently prayed Mary would understand and stared at the sun sitting on the horizon. His desire to go to the mission field had overtaken everything else. The portrait, still drying in the living room, would not be much consolation to his fiancée, but it was the only way he could think of to say goodbye.

Perelandra

I have always been impressed with Lewis’ ability to transform words into worlds. In Perelandra, the second book in his space trilogy, I enjoyed the depictions of the dragons on the planet and desired eagerly to draw one—a noble, good, untainted beast as in the story. The dragon came first, and the idea to make a book cover, second. Therefore, this piece is not so much meant to portray the depth or true nature of the book, as a cover should, but is a simple snapshot of my personal pursuits.

The Nutcracker
